Frequently Asked Questions

What are rubber floor mats used for at home?
Rubber floor mats protect flooring and add slip-resistant footing in garages, gyms, laundry rooms, entryways, and under exercise equipment. Their dense surface absorbs impact, resists water and stains, and stays put under heavy use, making them a practical choice anywhere floors take abuse.
Are rubber mats safe for hardwood floors?
Yes, with one caution: use rubber mats labeled non-staining or place a breathable rug pad underneath. Some rubber compounds can discolor hardwood finishes over time if moisture gets trapped. Lift and clean under the mat periodically to let the floor breathe.
How do I clean rubber floor mats?
Sweep or shake off loose debris, then wash with warm water and mild dish soap using a stiff brush. Rinse and air-dry fully before returning the mat. Avoid harsh solvents and prolonged direct sunlight, both of which can dry out and crack rubber over time.
Do rubber mats have a smell, and does it go away?
New rubber mats often have a noticeable rubber odor. It fades substantially within days to a few weeks. Speed it up by airing the mat outdoors or in a ventilated room and washing it with mild soap and water before first use.
What is the best floor mat for a kitchen?
A perforated rubber anti-fatigue mat. It cushions you while you stand, lets spills drain through, and can be hosed clean.
Which floor mats are easiest to clean?
Rubber and PVC: hose them off or wipe them down. Polypropylene mats can be shaken out and hosed. Coir is best shaken or beaten out.
Can I use an outdoor mat indoors?
Yes. Rubber and polypropylene mats work in both places. Inside, choose a low-profile mat so the door swings over it.
Will the mat curl or slide?
Our heavy-duty door mat has a heavy PVC backing that keeps it flat. Rubber mats stay put through their weight and grip.

Rubber, coir, polypropylene or PVC?

  • Rubber: heavy, slip-resistant and waterproof. Perforated rubber drains spills, which makes it the best choice for kitchens, bars and garages. New rubber has a smell that fades within days to weeks.
  • Coir: natural coconut fiber that scrapes dirt off shoes better than anything else. Best outdoors under a porch or overhang. Coir sheds a little at first.
  • Polypropylene: traps water and dirt, dries fast, and has a low profile, so it suits the inside of the door.
  • PVC: fully waterproof, and works as a liquid barrier in garages.

What size floor mat do you need?

For a doormat, aim for at least 80% of the door's width. A standard 36" door takes a 24×36" mat at minimum. Use 36×60" or larger for double doors or busy entrances. For the kitchen, measure the area where you stand at the sink or counter.
